Diagrams
Diagrams overview
ITVA builds network diagrams from the live data that it syncs from your devices. Learn about the five diagram kinds and what each one shows.
You choose the devices and the diagram kind. ITVA then finds the links between those devices in the synced data and draws them for you.
How diagrams work
A diagram has two types of nodes:
- Device nodes show the devices that you selected.
- Interface nodes show the interfaces that have a link to another device in the diagram.
A diagram also has two types of links. A device link connects a device to its interfaces. An interface link connects two interfaces on different devices, and shows the relation that the diagram kind found.
ITVA only looks for links between the devices in the diagram. If a neighbor device is not in the diagram, the diagram does not show it.
ITVA builds the diagram again each time you open it, from the latest synced data. If a link is new on your network, sync the devices before you open the diagram.
Diagram kinds
You select the kind when you create a diagram. The kind sets which synced data ITVA uses to find links.
| Kind | Synced data | ITVA draws a link when |
|---|---|---|
| LLDP | LLDP neighbors | Both devices list each other as LLDP neighbors on the two interfaces |
| CDP | CDP neighbors | One device lists the other as a CDP neighbor on the two interfaces |
| IS-IS | IS-IS neighbors and interface IP addresses | The IS-IS neighbor IP on each interface is the IP address of the other interface |
| OSPF | OSPF neighbors and interface IP addresses | The OSPF neighbor IP on each interface is the IP address of the other interface |
| Layer 3 | Interface IP addresses | Interfaces on two different devices have IP addresses in the same subnet |
LLDP
An LLDP diagram shows the physical links that LLDP finds. LLDP must be on for each interface that you want to see. ITVA matches the neighbor name that each device reports to the hostname of the other device in ITVA.
CDP
A CDP diagram shows the physical links between devices that run CDP. CDP must be on for each interface that you want to see. Like LLDP, ITVA matches the reported neighbor name to the hostname of the other device.
IS-IS
An IS-IS diagram shows the IS-IS adjacencies between your devices. ITVA uses the latest synced IP address on each interface to match the two sides of an adjacency.
OSPF
An OSPF diagram shows the OSPF neighbors between your devices. ITVA uses the latest synced IP address on each interface to match the two sides.
Layer 3
A Layer 3 diagram shows which devices share a subnet. ITVA links two interfaces on different devices when their IP addresses are in the same subnet. This kind does not need a discovery or routing protocol.
Vendor supportLink colors
The color of an interface link shows the health of the link.
| Color | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | The link is healthy |
| Red, pulsing | The link is unhealthy |
| Gray | ITVA has no health data for the link |
For LLDP, CDP, and Layer 3 diagrams, a link is healthy when the protocol status of both interfaces is up. For OSPF and IS-IS diagrams, a link is unhealthy when a neighbor is missing from the latest sync of the device.
View a diagram at a past time
ITVA keeps the history of the data that it syncs. To see a diagram as it was at a past time, set the date and time field at the top of the diagram. ITVA then builds the diagram from the data that was current at that time. To go back to live data, clear the field.
Node details
To see details about a node, select the Toggle Sidebar button at the top of the diagram. Then select a node.
For a device node, the sidebar shows the management IP address and the vendor. It also shows the synced table for the diagram kind: interface IP addresses for Layer 3, LLDP neighbors for LLDP, and IS-IS neighbors for IS-IS.
For an interface node, the sidebar shows the bandwidth use for the last 24 hours and the interface configuration. In IS-IS diagrams, it also shows the IS-IS metric and level of the interface.
The sidebar also has a button to connect to the device. For more information, see Connect overview.
