Add a circuit

Record your WAN and carrier circuits with their costs, rates, and contract dates, and link them to locations and device interfaces.

A circuit is a connection that a provider supplies, for example an internet link or an MPLS link. By the end of this guide, you have a circuit linked to its locations and to the device interfaces that use it.

Before you begin

  • You need the provider of the circuit. See Add a circuit provider.
  • Your role must have the manage permission for Circuits, in the Infrastructure group.
  • To link the circuit to an interface, your role must also be able to manage the device.

Add the circuit

  1. Open Inventory. Under Infrastructure, select Circuits.
  2. Select New Circuit.
  3. In Provider:, select the provider.
  4. In Carrier ID, enter the circuit ID that the provider uses.
  5. Fill in the optional fields that you need. The table below describes each field.
  6. Select Save.
FieldRequiredWhat to enter
Provider:YesThe company that supplies the circuit.
Carrier IDYesThe circuit ID that the provider uses.
ParentNoA circuit that contains this circuit.
Monthly Recurring Cost (MRC)NoThe monthly cost. ITVA shows it in US dollars.
Committed Information Rate (CIR)NoThe guaranteed rate, in bps, Kbps, Mbps, or Gbps.
Peak Information Rate (PIR)NoThe maximum burst rate. Must be equal to or more than the CIR.
Account NumberNoYour account number with the provider.
DescriptionNoA short description of the circuit.
LocationsNoOne or more locations that the circuit serves.
Contract Start DateNoThe date the contract starts.
Contract End DateNoThe date the contract ends.
FilesNoDocuments for the circuit, for example the contract.
Circuit fields. Only Provider and Carrier ID are required.

Group circuits with a parent

Use Parent when one circuit runs inside another, for example virtual circuits on a physical link. In the Circuits list, child circuits show below their parent. Select the arrow next to a parent to show or hide its child circuits. A circuit cannot be its own parent, and it cannot be a parent of a circuit above it.

Link the circuit to the device interface that connects to it. An interface can have more than one circuit.

  1. Open the device, then open the interface.
  2. Select Associate Circuits.
  3. Search by carrier ID, description, or provider.
  4. Select the check box for each circuit.
  5. Select Save.

Use the CIR for bandwidth alerts

An alerting condition can measure interface utilization against the circuit CIR instead of the interface speed. To do this, select Use circuit CIR instead of interface speed as bandwidth limit for alerting. in the condition. ITVA selects this option by default. See Create an alerting condition.

If the interface has more than one circuit with a CIR, ITVA uses the lowest CIR. If no linked circuit has a CIR, ITVA uses the interface speed. ITVA does not use deleted circuits.

Check that it worked

  • The circuit shows in the Circuits list with its provider, locations, and interfaces.
  • The circuit page lists the linked interfaces in the Interfaces card.
  • The cards at the top of the Circuits page include the circuit: Circuit Count, Provider Count, Total MRC, and Total ARC (the MRC times 12). The cards count only the circuits that match the current search and filters.

To find a circuit, search by carrier ID, description, provider, interface, or device. You can also filter the list by Provider and Locations.

Edit or delete a circuit

To change a circuit, open it and select Edit.

When you delete a circuit, ITVA archives it. The circuit no longer shows in the Circuits list, and ITVA no longer uses its CIR for alerts. To delete a circuit, open it, select Delete, and confirm.

Troubleshooting

PIR must be greater than or equal to CIR

The PIR is less than the CIR. Check the values and the units. For example, 500 Kbps is less than 100 Mbps. If the circuit cannot burst above the CIR, leave Peak Information Rate (PIR) empty.

Please select a provider before saving

Select a provider in Provider:. If the provider is not in the list, add the provider first.

Some of the files are still uploading

Wait for all files in Files to finish uploading, then select Save again. If ITVA shows that some files were not uploaded, remove those files and add them again.

Associate Circuits is missing

If the interface page does not show Associate Circuits, your role cannot manage the device. Ask an administrator for this permission.
