Monitoring / Alerting Channels

Send alerts to a Microsoft Teams channel

Create a Teams workflow that receives webhook requests, then connect it to an ITVA Teams channel so incident notifications post to your team.

ITVA posts notifications to Microsoft Teams through a webhook URL. You create the URL in Teams with a workflow, then add it to a Teams channel in ITVA. By the end of this page, a test message from ITVA shows in your Teams channel.

Before you begin

  • You need a Teams channel for the alerts, and permission to add workflows to it. Your Microsoft 365 administrator can turn off Workflows for your organization.
  • You need access to the Settings > Alerting page in ITVA.

Create the workflow in Teams

  1. In Teams, find the channel that will receive the alerts.
  2. Next to the channel name, select More options (...), then select Workflows.
  3. Search for and select the Send webhook alerts to a channel template.
  4. Make sure Team and Channel show the correct channel.
  5. Select Save.
  6. On the workflow details page, copy the webhook URL.

Caution: anyone who has the webhook URL can post to the channel. Keep the URL private. Do not put it in tickets, chat messages, or shared documents.

Add the channel in ITVA

  1. Go to Settings > Alerting.
  2. In the Channels card, select New Channel.
  3. Enter a Name that says where the alerts go, for example "Network team in Teams".
  4. Under Kind, select Teams.
  5. Paste the webhook URL into URL.
  6. Select Save.

ITVA posts each notification to the URL as an Adaptive Card with the incident message in Markdown. The channel sends nothing until an alerting rule uses it in an escalation level.

Check that it worked

  1. In the Channels card, open the channel.
  2. Select Test Channel.

ITVA shows "A test message has been sent." The Teams channel shows a card with the text "This is an automated test of the ITVA system. No action is required."

Troubleshooting

Test Channel shows an HTTP 401 or 403 error

ITVA sends requests without a Microsoft sign-in. If the workflow only accepts requests from users in your organization, Teams rejects them. To fix this, open the workflow and set Who can trigger the flow to Anyone. Then save the workflow and select Test Channel again.

The test succeeds but no card shows in Teams

ITVA reports success when Teams accepts the request. The workflow then runs on its own, and it can still fail. Open the workflow in the Workflows app and look at its run history for the error.

The channel uses an Office 365 connector URL

Microsoft is retiring Office 365 connectors, including the Incoming Webhook connector. If your ITVA channel uses a connector URL, create a workflow with the steps above. Then open the channel in ITVA, select Edit Channel, and replace the URL.
