DNS zones and records are automated data. ITVA collects them live from your Windows Server and Infoblox DNS servers, and can use them to name the IP addresses in IPAM.

## How it works

1. The probe on your network connects to the DNS server.
2. The probe reads the server's zones and records, and sends them to ITVA.
3. ITVA saves them and shows the DNS name next to matching IP addresses.

Each sync replaces the records from the sync before it. If a zone or record is no longer on the server, ITVA removes it.

## Turn on DNS sync

Add the DNS server as a device in ITVA. Then sync it with **DNS** selected, by hand or in a schedule. **DNS** is not selected by default. See [Sync data from your devices](https://www.itva.com/docs/getting-started/sync-data-from-your-devices).

On the device's **DNS** tab, you can sync zones now, and turn off **Sync Entries** for zones that you want ITVA to skip.

## Add DNS names to IP allocations

On **Inventory** > **IP Allocations**, the **DNS Server Sync** card adds the A records of one zone to IPAM. Each record with an IP address in one of your subnets becomes an IP allocation with the source **DNS**. ITVA does not change IP allocations with the source **Manual** or **DHCP**.

Caution: When you sync a zone, ITVA deletes the IP allocations with the source **DNS** that are not in that zone.

## Where to see the data

- **Inventory** > **DNS** shows the zones and records from all your DNS servers.
- The **FQDN** column on ARP and MAC entries shows the DNS name of each IP address.
