DHCP leases are automated data. ITVA reads the active leases live from your Windows Server DHCP server, and adds them to IPAM as IP allocations.

## How it works

1. You link a subnet to its DHCP server.
2. When the server syncs, the probe on your network reads the active leases for each linked subnet, and sends them to ITVA.
3. ITVA adds each lease as an IP allocation with the source **DHCP**, with its MAC address and hostname.

Each sync replaces the leases from the sync before it. If a lease is no longer on the server, ITVA removes its IP allocation.

## Turn on DHCP sync

Caution: If you delete the DHCP server device, ITVA also deletes each subnet that uses it, and all IP allocations in those subnets.

1. Add the Windows Server DHCP server as a device in ITVA.
2. Open the subnet and select **Edit**.
3. In **DHCP Server**, select the device.
4. Select **Save**.

To sync now, select **Sync DHCP Server** on the subnet. To keep leases current, create a schedule with the **Sync DHCP** task on the DHCP server. See [Create your first schedule](https://www.itva.com/docs/getting-started/create-your-first-schedule).

Check the result on **Inventory** > **IP Allocations**. Leases show with the source **DHCP** and a **Last Synced** time.
