A rack elevation shows which device is in each rack unit (U). In ITVA, the elevation is the **Assignments** card on the rack page. By the end of this guide, you have a rack with devices in its slots.

## Before you begin

- You need a location for the rack. See [Add a location](https://www.itva.com/docs/asset-management/add-a-location).
- Your role must have the manage permission for **Locations**. Racks use the Locations permissions. There is no separate rack permission.
- The devices you want to place must already be in ITVA.

## Add a rack

1. Open **Inventory**, select **Locations**, and open the location.
2. In the **Racks for <LOCATION>** card, select **New Rack**.
3. In **Name**, enter a name. Each rack at a location must have a different name.
4. Optional: In **Description**, enter a description, for example the row or cage.
5. In **Units**, enter the height of the rack in rack units, from 1 to 64.
6. Optional: In **Images**, add photos of the rack.
7. Select **Save**.

## Place a device in the rack

The **Assignments** card shows the **Front** and the **Back** of the rack. Slot 1 is at the bottom. Each side has its own slots, so a device on the front does not block the same slot on the back.

1. In the **Racks for <LOCATION>** card, select the rack name.
2. In the **Assignments** card, select the empty slot for the top of the device, for example **Slot #10**.
3. In **Device**, select the device.
4. In **Units**, select the height of the device, from 1U to 16U.
5. Select **Save**.

The device fills the slot you selected and the slots below it. For example, if you select **Slot #10** and **2U**, the device uses slots 10 and 9. A device can be in one rack only.

## Remove a device from the rack

1. In the **Assignments** card, move the pointer over the device.
2. Select the trash icon in the corner of the device.
3. Select **Confirm**.

This removes the device from the rack only. The device stays in ITVA.

## Edit or delete a rack

To change the name, description, units, or images, open the rack and select **Edit Rack**.

**Caution:** Deleting a rack is permanent. ITVA removes all devices from the rack and removes the rack from floor plans. The devices stay in ITVA.

To delete a rack, open it, select **Delete**, and confirm.

## Check that it worked

- In the **Assignments** card, the device name covers all the slots the device uses. Select the name to open the device.
- The device page shows the rack in the **Rack** field.

## Troubleshooting

### The device units do not fit in the rack

The device goes below slot 1. For example, a 4U device cannot start at slot 2. Select a higher slot, or check the **Units** value.

### This device overlaps with another device

If ITVA shows `This device overlaps with <DEVICE>.`, another device on the same side uses one or more of the slots. Select a different slot, or remove the other device first.

### The device is already in a rack

If the device is in a different rack, ITVA does not save the new placement. Remove the device from the other rack first. The device page shows the current rack in the **Rack** field.

### You cannot select a slot

If the empty slots show as plain text, your role can view locations but not manage them. Ask an administrator to give your role the manage permission for Locations.
