> Add a location to record where your devices are. A location holds its racks and floor plans, and you can link it to circuits.

By the end of this guide, you have a location with an address and map coordinates, and devices assigned to it.

## Before you begin

- Your role must have the manage permission for **Locations**, in the **Infrastructure** group. See [Roles and permissions](https://www.itva.com/docs/access-management/roles-and-permissions).

## Create a location

1. Open **Inventory**. Under **Infrastructure**, select **Locations**.
2. Select **New Location**.
3. In **Name**, enter a name for the location, for example the site or building name.
4. In **Address**, enter the full street address.
5. Optional: In **Latitude** and **Longitude**, enter the coordinates of the location.
6. Optional: In **Contacts**, select the people to contact about this location.
7. Select **Save**.

### How ITVA sets the coordinates

If **Latitude** or **Longitude** is empty, ITVA looks up the address with Google Maps and sets both values. ITVA does this each time you save the location. If you enter both values, ITVA uses them and does not look up the address.

## Assign devices to the location

You set the location on each device. A device has one location.

1. Open the device and edit it.
2. In **Location**, select the location.
3. Save the device.

## Check that it worked

- The location shows in the **Locations** list. Select its ID to open it.
- The location page shows the name, address, coordinates, and contacts. It also has the **Racks** and **Floor Plan Diagrams** cards for this location.
- The device page shows the location in the **Location** field.

## Delete a location

**Caution:** When you delete a location, ITVA also permanently deletes its racks and floor plan diagrams. You cannot undo this. The devices and circuits stay in ITVA, but they are no longer linked to the location.

1. Open the location.
2. Select **Delete**.
3. Confirm the deletion.

## Troubleshooting

### The address could not be geocoded

If ITVA shows `'<ADDRESS>' could not be geocoded`, Google Maps did not find the address. ITVA does not save the location. Correct the address and save again. If the address is correct, enter **Latitude** and **Longitude** yourself. ITVA then does not look up the address.

### The New Location button is missing

If you do not see **New Location**, **Edit**, or **Delete**, your role can view locations but not manage them. Ask an administrator to give your role the manage permission for Locations.
